GAP ANALYSIS FOR ASSESSING 5S IMPLEMENTATION IN AN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY

Abstract

The 5S Methodology is a technique from Japan to improve the productivity of work that is done regardless of timing. The 5S method has been implemented in many places, such as workplaces, industries, even universities, and the laboratory of the university where the author’s study is the main focus. However, in Indonesia, there were problems, as the Shitsuke value of 5S was abandoned during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, there is an urgency to revive both the 5S and the existing culture inside the IE laboratory to increase the productivity rate and reduce waste. One of the assisting methods being implemented is the Plan-Do-Act-Check framework, as well as photographic observation, conducted via a survey questionnaire. The statistical results of this evaluation prove that the 5S technique in the laboratory is currently deficient, and the importance of applying 5S in the laboratory needs to be addressed sooner. With the assistance of Gap Analysis and Observation via photographic documentation, there are four control points set as high priority in the list. With these problems and techniques being applied carefully, the 5S implementation in the Industrial Engineering lab of Swiss German University has a greater probability of being successful.
